Whether it is for your vacations or a company trip, you will certainly have to travel in France and abroad. To leave serenely, you will need to prepare your transportation, your belongings or the schedule of the different days planned. But one element is often forgotten: the insurance.

Travel assistance is a must to protect you in case of unforeseen events without being caught off guard. But how does travel insurance work and what is its purpose? You may have one that you pay for annually without paying attention, but if not, we strongly advise you to find out more so that you don't go on your next trip without the right travel assistance for your needs. It could save you from unpleasant surprises!

What is travel assistance?

Before guiding you to subscribe to an adapted travel assistance, let's take the time to define it. This is a nominative contract that provides you with help in case of unforeseen events during a trip in France or abroad.  You will be able to receive appropriate assistance wherever you are and also benefit from the coverage of certain expenses related to your unexpected events.

However, travel assistance cannot take care of everything, so it is important to know the terms of your contract. But to help you see more clearly, here are some examples for which this nominative assistance will intervene.

  • Disease
  • Flight
  • Breakdown, car accident
  • Accident

Each contract will have its own specificities and will cover a defined geographical area, so we advise you to find out about the guarantees of your assistance before leaving on your trip.

  • What guarantees do I have with my travel assistance?

This type of contract will take care of the inconveniences related to you but also to your goods. You will have to find out what the actual guarantees are before subscribing to a travel assistance policy. But to help you see more clearly, here are some examples of guarantees according to the type of event which can occur during your travels.

  • Accident and illness:
  • Repatriation of the insured and accompanying persons
  • Reimbursement of extended stay expenses
  • Accompanying the insured
  • Reimbursement of medical expenses
  • Deaths:
  • Repatriation of the body
  • Taking care of the formalities concerning the coffin or urn
  • Early return for the death of a loved one or for the insured's loved ones in the event of the insured's death
  • Vehicle:
  • In the event of a problem, coverage of towing costs
  • Management of the routing of spare parts for repair
  • Coverage of the repatriation of the vehicle and passengers, accommodation expenses
  • Reimbursement for vehicle rental
  • Lost or stolen documents (credit card, travel documents):
  • Help with an advance payment
  • Assistance during the rest of the trip
  • Legal issue:
  • Legal assistance in a foreign country
  • Payment of penal bond

It is therefore possible to purchase travel assistance for many occasions. Planning your contract before you leave will help protect you in case of need. You may already have travel assistance, but if not, you should take the time to find out what to do about it.

How do you get travel assistance that meets your needs?

If you are not sure whether you have travel assistance, it is quite normal. Indeed, this assistance is often available through other contracts such as comprehensive travel insurance. It is also possible to find it in insurance contracts such as those given as an example:

  • Multi-risk home insurance
  • Multi-risk car
  • Professional insurance
  • Bank insurance

We therefore advise you to take the time to check your contracts to make sure that you do not subscribe to travel assistance if you already have one. If this is not the case, you can subscribe to a specific contract for a specific trip and take advantage of it punctually. But it is also possible to take out an annual contract to be covered during each trip, regardless of the time of year.

The price of this travel assistance will depend on the clauses of your contract and the people covered. But to give you an example, an individual travel assistance can cost you from 5 to 100€ for a one-time trip or from 40 to 150€ for an annual contract. For family travel assistance, you should plan on 15 to 200€ for a one-time trip and 150 to 600€ for an annual contract.

We therefore advise you to find out more before subscribing to a travel assistance offer, as this will avoid any unpleasant surprises if you need help when traveling in France or abroad.
